Perplexing cover, perhaps originally mailed in Hankow as there is a commentary on the back of the envelope in the same handwriting as the addressing--but given the cancel date, August 9, 1900, TM C, the letter was only postmarked when it reached Shanghai because of the Boxer Rebellion !! Message reads:  "Hankow most important point in the Yangsi basin in military charge of Hankow & Schangi". Chinese chop in red and Manchester transit on rear. Note that both sides are the same white paper of the envelope; just some scanner reflection....
