Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at a nice older Turner S22D dynamic microphone from the late 1940's to mid 1950's. This heavily deco inspired piece with satin chrome finish makes this one of the most widely recognized microphones ever produced. The 22 series came in several different styles over the years with the only changes coming in the lower half that carried the Turner badge and the type of element used. The 22 microphone either had the crystal element or the Dynamic element. All 22X's carried the crystal element which did not hold up as well over the past 70 years.
You'll see in pic # 2 an old 1949 Turner advertisement showing specs and priced on these 40's era mics.
You generally rarely find one that works well or works at all. This one sadly...is one of them but it's still quite pretty cosmetically speaking. This was the "S" model meaning it came with the on / off switch. it was the most expensive model of the 22X series and the switch still works as it should.
This unit has the 2nd generation lower flat front and rounded rear along with black Turner badge with switch. The overall finish is very good and shows just minor scratches and tiny pitting. Zero dents or fractures. The front grill looks very nice too as does the inner black cloth screen. I would give a this mic a conservative 7 + on a scale of 1 - 10. This would make a nice display in any collection of vintage early microphones. A true piece of Americana and a conversation piece anywhere it sits.
The threading for the cable and mic stand are perfect. No issues. Solid inside and out this mic was built to last.
MICROPHONE STAND IS PART OF THIS SALE...
Microphone stand is a polished aluminum Electro Voice 423A model that compliments the S22D nicely. Due to the design and age they look like they belong to each other. The stand is a late 50's / 60's era model so it's just about period to the mic and certainly would have been used with an S22D at that time. The stem looks pretty good with typical scratches. The base has a bit more wear as seen in the pics provided but not too shabby either. Just scuff marks and small scratches. The base still has the 3 rubber pads on the bottom that work great.
The 423A makes a stable platform for this mic.
Total height with stand and mic is appx is 10 inches X 5 inches wide.
