Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at a very unique and rare American D9T dual dynamic microphone made in Los Angeles, California during the mid to late 1940's. This is one of the most collectible microphones of the 1940's and 50's and it comes with a beautiful Atlas DS-6 desk stand that is period to the mic.
This "ribbon style" microphone sits on it's original yoke and resembled the high end RCA mics of that era. The D9T has a look all it's own replicating the Skyscrapers of the day that were being built all across America. It's actually a dual dynamic mic however. The heavy deco influence can be seen with it rounded, smooth edges that are appealing to the eye at any angle.
The D9 series was first introduced in the late 1930's and had a run of about 15 to 20 years total.
It should be noted right away that the dynamic elements look great but it appears that only one of the two works. This was a High impedance models and sounds the part. This D9T comes with the original cloth element cover and it too looks fantastic. This mic was very well cared for over the years. The D9 mics were true cardioid mics having the two elements for a good sound. Again, I believe only one is working as this mic is only at about 60% strength. It can be used for an old school sound but I would not recommend using this for singing or broadcasting.
The finish on this mic shows wear but is certainly above average compared to most D9A or D9AT mics I have personally seen and both thumb screws are present and work excellent. Many are often missing at least one thumb screw. The satin chrome finish shows small spots of wear in the satin chrome finish which is far too common on these older mics but still has a very nice luster. The finish has been cleaned inside and out as well as on the yoke which rotates perfectly giving the mic a wide degree of tilt.
Bent and broken ribs are a common problem on these but there are absolutely no broken or fractured ribs on this old girl and it's probably the nicest overall D9 I have seen in a while. All original screws are included.
This was one of American's finest microphones ever made and a true collectors piece because of sound, design and rarity.
The original American badge is still present and looks great as does the American decal. The mic with yoke is appx 8 inches high X 4 inches wide X 2 inches deep.
I would rate the overall physical condition of this mic a 6 + on a scale of 1 - 10.
MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS PART OF THIS SALE
...
The stand is a beautiful Atlas DS-6 model with a heavy, extra wide base to keep that precious D9T from tipping over. The DS-6 stand is from the 1940's when Atlas first started as a company and the look and design compliments this mic very well.
The DS-6 has a cast iron base with a 4 inch riser. The original paint looks pretty good with just lite scratches and scuffs. Best part is that the 3 original felt pads are still present and in very nice condition.
Total height with the mic and stand is 13 inches tall X 6 inches wide. Total weight is appx 6 pounds.
This would make a great display piece in the home, office or studio and sure to draw attention wherever it sits.
